Client Assessment Research Fellowship

FINCA’s Client Assessment Fellowship offers students and young professionals the unique opportunity to spend 10 weeks working in the field to help FINCA better understand the effects that financial services have on our clients. Fellows use the FINCA Client Assessment Tool (FCAT) to collect social performance data that is input into a handheld Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) device. Fellows are expected to carry out and present initial findings prior to rigorous analyses carried out at FINCA headquarters in Washington, DC.

FINCA will offer a minimum of 9 Fellowships during the summer of 2010. Research Fellows have the opportunity to benefit from:

  • A specialized training for one week in Washington, DC in best practice surveying techniques and methodology to collect client information;
  • Field experience conducing research in teams of three Research Fellows for up to 10 weeks in 1-2 impoverished countries;
  • Experience analyzing data to determine poverty levels, program impact, and why clients join, remain with or exit the program;
  • Presentation of their findings to local management and also production of a written report; 
  • A final briefing in the fall at FINCA International Headquarters.

Since 2006, over 100 Fellows have been rigorously trained and conducted FCAT research in all 21 of our Affiliates. FINCA has also trained and supported Fellows to serve as client assessment researchers in over 15 microfinance institutions across the world. These Research Fellows, sponsored through the generous support of the Templeton Foundation have interviewed over 16,000 FINCA clients and thousands more from other MFIs.
