FINCA Honduras Story

FINCA Honduras Stands by Clients Whose Businesses Were Destroyed by Fire

This February a massive fire swept through three markets in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, where many of our clients run their businesses from market stalls. While, thankfully, no one was killed in the massive blaze, 114 of our clients’ businesses were completely destroyed, along with their merchandise.

To say this was a devastating blow to people struggling on a daily basis to make a livelihood for their families is an understatement. But one thing FINCA clients know is that they can count on FINCA in times of distress. Within days, our loan officers were meeting with clients to assess the damage to their businesses, and our leadership was developing a plan to assure our clients that their loans would be extended under a six-month grace period...

An Interview About FINCA with Chairman Bob Hatch

We're sure you'll enjoy viewing FINCA's Chairman of the Board Bob Hatch as he's interviewed for his alma mater, the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth University. The brother of FINCA Founder John Hatch, Bob has been a key driving force behind FINCA's success since its inception in 1985. In this interview, he shares how his graduate education prepared him to help guide FINCA to becoming one of the world's leading microfinance networks. He also tells the story of his favorite client, Alice Asiimwe of Uganda.

“I’m a landlord now. Can you imagine?”

Victoria Banda is a 36-year-old, single woman living with her parents and two sisters in Lusaka, Zambia. She did not finish primary or secondary school but, over the years, has become the main income earner for her household. In 2001, she borrowed $20 from FINCA to expand food sales through the small storefront she had opened. Through hard work and careful management of her money, she has continually grown and improved her business, and she now operates a much larger store in front of her home.

But her success has gone far beyond expanding her business. She has been able to help her family enlarge their home, and she’s even acquired a rental property...
