FINCA's Rupert Scofield interview with Credit Suisse

FINCA President & CEO Rupert Scofield was invited to sit down with Credit Suisse recently to participate in an interview in which he shares his views about the future trends and opportunities in microfinance and social entrepreneurship, and the important roles all stakeholders can play in their successful development.

"Microfinance was the response to a major market failure: the inability of low-income entrepreneurs in developing countries to obtain loans to finance their businesses. Microfinance is a classic example of traditional business practices addressing social issues in a way that is both scalable and sustainable. At FINCA, we now have $500 million in loans-outstanding to over 900,000 low-income micro-entrepreneurs on five continents, and we’ve created over 8,000 jobs..."

Citibank Staff Provides Training for FINCA Jordan Clients

Staff members of FINCA Jordan were recently joined by a group of Citibank employees at the Deir Alla branch to conduct training for clients designed to enhance their business management skills, and advise them in areas of personal financial management, marketing and product development.

The FINCA Jordan clients own small and medium businesses primarily focused on traditional handicrafts, construction and agricultural services like livestock production. Several have been winners of Citi’s Micro-Enterprise Awards.

Ten Loaves of Bread and an $80 Loan

Egreen Namusokwe of Lusaka, Zambia, is 57 years old, married and the mother of six children. But each day Egreen’s heart is sad because, as hard as her husband has tried to support the entire family and pay the children’s school fees, his income has never been enough. Because there’s just not enough to support them all, they have had to send three of their children to live with her sister in another village. 

She knew there had to be another way. She talked with some of the women in her neighborhood and said she “was amazed to hear about FINCA.” She was introduced to the Samalani Village Bank, and took out her first loan of $ 80.
